State Owned Company (BUMN) Holding Mining Industry, known as MIND ID, is actively embracing technological advancements within the mining sector. MIND ID, as a BUMN Holding in the mining industry, consistently innovates its technology to effectively compete on a global scale, particularly within the mining domain.
This technological transformation aligns with the leadership of Erick Thohir, who is credited with elevating BUMN to greater prominence on the international stage over the past four years. One noteworthy initiative includes encouraging BUMN entities to expand their services into the ASEAN and Indo-Pacific regions.
Under Erick Thohir’s leadership, several state-owned companies, including MIND ID, from diverse sectors have been showcased through the ASEAN and Indo-Pacific Forum (AIPF) 2023. “Over the past four years, state-owned companies under Mr. Erick Thohir’s leadership have consistently demonstrated improvement and progress,” stated Heri Yusuf, Corporate Secretary of BUMN Holding Mining Industry MIND ID.
As part of their technological transformation efforts in the mining sector, MIND ID, through its subsidiary PT Timah Tbk., is constructing a Top Sumberge Lance (TSL) Ausmelt Furnace smelter in the Muntok Metallurgical Unit Area, West Bangka Regency.
This smelter’s construction exemplifies MIND ID’s commitment to maximizing downstreaming in the tin mining industry. The operation of the TSL Ausmelt Furnace smelter aims to expedite domestic downstreaming, addressing the challenges posed by the limited availability of high-grade tin ore, a crucial mining commodity.
The TSL Ausmelt Furnace, owned by MIND ID Group member PT Timah Tbk., represents a transformation and innovation in low-grade tin processing technology. Previously, PT Timah Tbk. did not utilize Reverberatory Furnace as part of its processing technology.
The investment for the TSL Ausmelt Furnace project, amounting to IDR 1.2 trillion, was sourced from the company’s capital expenditure (capex) budget. This furnace tackles the current challenges in the tin mining industry by processing tin ore concentrate with grades starting from 40 Sn, boasting a production capacity of 40,000 tons of crude tin per year or 35,000 metric tons of ingots annually. The furnace employs an automated process with a control system, enhancing work safety and efficiency through modern tin processing technology.
“The use of TSL Ausmelt Furnace technology in PT Timah Tbk.’s smelter is the first in Asia and the 5th largest in the world. This underscores MIND ID’s dedication to maximizing the exploration of mining resources in the country, particularly tin minerals,” emphasized Heri Yusuf.
In addition to the smelter project, MIND ID, through its subsidiary PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI), has successfully implemented 5G Smart Mining technology in collaboration with PT Telekomunikasi Selular (Telkomsel).
The inauguration of this groundbreaking technology, led by the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo (Jokowi), took place in Tembagapura, Papua, on September 1, 2022. President Jokowi emphasized the pivotal role of technological innovation in navigating global competition in an increasingly digitized landscape.
The utilization of 5G Smart Mining technology marks a significant milestone, being the first of its kind in the Southeast Asia region. This technological intervention, incorporating artificial intelligence, internet of things (IoT), and big data, is poised to enhance mining operational activities, making them more efficient, modern, and, above all, safe and sustainable.
Heri Yusuf highlighted that the application of 5G smart mining technology enables the monitoring of underground mining activities through cameras connected via artificial intelligence, thereby minimizing the risk of work accidents.
“The presence of 5G technology innovation in the PTFI mining area can strengthen MIND ID’s strategic position as a leader in the Indonesian mining industry. MIND ID continues to provide added value for Indonesia,” affirmed Heri Yusuf.
